On Sat, Jan 15 (Martin Luther King weekend) we decided to go for a drive and do some exploring. We picked a spot in Virginia that we hadn't been to before - Leesburg. It was about 45 min away. It was a nice drive. While there we realized that West Virginia was only a half hour away! We decided it would be fun to go see West Virginia and get a souvenir spoon. Why not visit another state?! Aliyah had fallen asleep in the car so we went for it.
We drove through the Blue Ridge mountains.
And reached West Virginia.
It was kind of a different, backwoods type of place. We had to laugh at a few things there. I really wish I had gotten a picture of the name of the street leading to the elementary school. It was called "Trail of Tears Rd" Ha ha!
We went to Charles Town to see if we could find a spoon and a place to eat. While there we discovered that Charles Town is historic and not just a horse racing and casino city. Charles Town was named after George Washington's brother, Charles, who settled the area. John Brown was also tried and convicted in this town.
We then went to Wendy's for some lunch. (Jeff wanted to eat at Jumbo Buffet, but Aliyah and I talked him out of it.) We couldn't find a spoon (the guy at the Visitors Center had never heard of a souvenir spoon before!) but we did find a pair of white church shoes for Aliyah at Walmart for only a dollar!
Our next stop was Harpers Ferry. We didn't know about this place either! It was beautiful! It was the highlight of our trip. It was across the Shenandoah River from Virginia.
It was so picturesque, tucked up on the hill by the river.
The town was veryquaint! They had shops, restaurants, and cute little streets. A lot of places were closed for the weekend. We really liked it there. It has a lot of history. We did not get very many pictures or do much there that day, but we definitely want to go back to see and do more (including getting a spoon)!
Imagine how beautiful it would look with all the leaves! It was pretty (even in January).
After discovering Harpers Ferry and deciding that we will come back, we headed home so that Jeff could do some studying. (Only 1 more semester left of studying!!!)
We really enjoyed our adventure of the day!
